Farrell's Vito Cannavo was brilliant in winning the 1,600, biding his time in four-lap contest until the final 250 meters.

Farrell's middle distance ace shadowed Stuyvesant's Serge Morrell and then shifted gears on the backstretch, before going unchallenged to the finish line in a meet record 4:26.60. Morrell was timed in 4:30.72.
