Walter Henning
03/26/2006

South Huntington (St. Anthony's) NY jr. Walter Henning, the record-breaking weight thrower indoors at both national meets, has continued his record spree outdoors.

An all-comers meet at St.Anthony's Sunday, March 26, which included multiple hammer competitions, was the site for two more Henning records. With the 6-kg. hammer, used for World and US Junior competitions, Henning broke the USR with a 226-8.5 in his only fair throw. The old mark was 224-0 by Nick Owens (Shelton, WA) in 2003.

Plagued by fouls all day, Henning also had just one fair throw with the 16-lb. (college/pro) implement (194-11), but hit three with the HS 12-pounder to make more history. His best was 237-5 (he also had 234+), breaking the 231-2 junior-class record held by Adam Midles (Capital HS, Olympia WA) since 2001, and becoming the No. 3 prep all-time overall.

We salute Walter as the BreakThru Athlete of the Week.
