The Junior US National Cross Country Championship women's 6,000-meter race (about 3.7 miles) was won by the 17-year-old Nicole Blood, the Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) High School star who last fall won her third straight Northeast Regional high school title at the same site. Blood, who is headed to the University of Oregon next fall, stopped representing her high school team a year ago because of differences with her coaches and has since been running on her own.
Blood's race was run in windblown snow, but she dismissed the conditions. She won by a second in 20:45.
Later in the day, Blood and her family flew to California to relocate in Simi Valley, where Blood will run for Royal High School.
We salute Nicole once again as BreakThru Athlete of the Week.
