Nicole Blood
02/05/2006

Saratoga Springs senior Nicole Blood ran a 4:46.82 mile in the women's open division of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory, improving her own national No. 1 time among high school girls.

She set the previous nation's-best time of 4:49.05 last month at Harvard University and won the Boston Indoor Games on Jan. 28 in 4:51.30.

Saturday's time would have been fast enough for first in Friday's Millrose Games girls' high school mile at Madison Square Garden -- won by Danielle Tauro of New Jersey in 4:51.89. But Blood wasn't eligible to compete because she runs unattached rather than for a high school team.

Blood, who will attend the University of Oregon on a running scholarship this fall, confirmed after the race she is moving to California because her stepfather, Jerry Buff, is transferring to a new job in the Simi Valley area.

We salute Nicole once again as BreakThru Athlete of the Week.
