Last Saturday, Rooney helped LaGuardia win the Manhattan Borough championship meet by winning the 3.1-mile race in a time of 21:01. That time was just one second behind her personal best, which she set last season at the state meet in Wappinger's Falls.

Julia an art major also stars in the classroom with a grade point average of 99.3. Marvin Kelemen, her coach at Laguardi High School stressed the impact that Rooney has on her teammates. He called her one of the team's leaders, someone who sets a positive example for both her teammates and her fellow students. She really is a very special kid," says Kelemen. "She completes all tasks, is a well-rounded student, athlete and person."
