Gill St. Bernard's Doug Smith fell just short in his quest to become the fastest sophomore in New Jersey history on Thursday. But he still left the newly-opened John Bennett Indoor Sports Complex as a state champion.

In a showdown between two of the best distance runners in the state, Smith narrowly edged Trinity Christian's Andrew Hanko, 9:08.1 to 9:08.3, in the Group I, 3,200. Smith and Hanko matched strides during the final lap of the race that was so close, fans were left guessing who won until the official announcement was made.
